RedCarpetInjection.com : Interview w/ Ted Dibiase

Speaking of wrestling, but a completely different company, we caught up with third-generation superstar Ted DiBiase from the WWE to talk about their Pay-Per-View this Monday called Breaking Point – headlined by The Undertaker vs. CM Punk and DiBiase & Cody Rhodes against D-Generation X. After the jump, read the full interview – exclusive to Red Carpet Injection online!

When you’re brought up in a wrestling family, do you have a choice to be a wrestler or is pretty much expected?
I definitely had a choice and was actually encouraged not to wrestle because it’s so hard, and a hard life in terms of travelling, being away from your family and being on the road which is hard for your body – you’re sometimes wrestling every night of the week. Ever since I can remember, from a very young age, I’ve always wanted to wrestle and there was a stipulation from my father that I would graduate college because I even thought of it. So that’s exactly what I did, and he gave me his blessing – it’s not one of thse given things that you’re automatically going to get a job if you grew up in the business. You get a look, for sure, but you have to carry the load for yourself. But here I am!

How has working with Randy Orton improved you as a wrestler?
I would give him a lot of credit because Randy is so talented, he’s our WWE champion and I look forward to his ‘I Quit’ match against John Cena at Breaking Point on Monday, but he has a lot of insight, experience and he’s so good at what he does. So it has helped skyrocket my career, I’m going into Monday at Breaking Point facing DX and it’s only been a year [since I joined with Orton] so Randy’s definitely helped.

The match on Monday is a submissions count anywhere match against Triple H and Shawn Michaels, how is that going to change the dynamics compared to your match at Summerslam?
In this case, there’s no count outs and this thing could end up in the parking lot of a Burger King! I’ve been thinking about it day in and day out, and there’s a lot of advantages for both teams. I think it’s going to be extremely exciting for fans, for me and Cody and for DX – it’s going to be extremely challenging. It doesn’t have to happen in the squared circle, and I think it’s going to be one for the books that nobody should miss.

It must be incredible working with DX, because that’s two dream opponents for anybody in the business.
Absolutely! I tell people all the time that we have an issue right now, but these are the guys that I grew up watching – especially Shawn Michaels, I was a big fan growing up and to find myself in the ring opposite him is very surreal. It’s an honour, and I don’t take this lightly at all. You hear the response that these guys get, and the response as you beat them up, it’s nothing like it.

Can you tell us a bit about The Marine 2, which hits DVD stores this year?
Yes, end of December I believe. That was so much fun, it was my first film and the sequel of the Marine with John Cena, and we filmed in Phuket [in Thailand] at this five star resort which was beautiful. The cool thing about the Marine 2 is that it’s based on actual events – I come home from War and my wife gets a job opportunity to open this resort for her billion dollar boss, so we treat it as a vacation. While we’re there terrorists storm the beach and take over the resort, they take hostages and it all happens in this resort. There’s been so many events that have occured exactly like that in Thailand, and it actually happened while we were there! The exact way that you’ll see in the movie is what happened to this other resort about 100 miles away, and I asked the guy who was in charge of all the guns on the film – “You got any live rounds that we could use to help?” [laughs] – so it happens a lot and they target westerners. But the film is action packed, I get blown up and barely escaped – It was a lot of fun and a very good movie, I was so happy with how it turned out. It was so much better than the first one with John Cena in it! [laughs].

One final question, why doesn’t your tag partner Cody Rhodes wear kneepads? That has been irritating me since he debuted! Do you know?
I don’t know! It bugs me, I’m glad you brought it up because it bugs me! I look at him every night and not only does It looks retarded, but he’s going to kill your knees. He’s only 24, and he loves to drop the knee all the time. Eventually that’s going to catch up to him but Cody likes to do his own thing.

You can watch Breaking Point on Monday morning (with replays that evening and the following day) on Main Event, which you can order on Foxtel, Optus or Austar. A big thankyou to our friends at the WWE for organising the interview, and make sure to check out our interview with John Cena in our October issue!
