When we travel around the world it is easy for us to get caught up in our own travels and not really pay as much attention to serious issues. Travelling around and trying to stick to a budget can often mean that you are too focused on penny pinching to stop and think what you could do for someone else that day. It doesn’t have to be a life saving procedure, but I am sure that there are a number of things we could all do to make a difference to someone’s day of future. There are a number of things that you can do; volunteer at an NGO, teach a language class, help someone with their English or even just help out someone that you see struggling, you can also make a difference in many other ways as well.
Something that we could take inspiration front is a book tour that has been running in the United Kingdom since 2013. The book tour was launched by Scottish Friendly and it aims to travel the length of the UK getting kids interested in reading and helping them with their education journey. The best thing that they have done is invite famous authors along to join sections of the tour, the authors will then visit schools and read their books with the students. From talking to the students about reading and their own books, the authors will most definitely inspire the next generation to pick up a book and read. Check out their website to see details about the tour and the list of top authors that have joined so far.
Now, I know that nearly all of us are not famous authors but that does not stop us from doing something useful with our spare time. If you are in a part of the world where English is important and is taught in schools and charity schools then you can definitely help. Why not read a book with the class one afternoon or even better, for 5 afternoons one week. It may not seem like much to you but anything that gets kids excited about learning is important, seeing a new face that has come in to introduce them to a new book could have a bug impact. Take a leaf out of Scottish Friendly’s book and start giving back wherever and however you can. Let’s travel the world but help it out a little along the way!
