Topping off a relaxing trip to Newcastle

Sometimes, you just need to get away and relax. Now, a city break isn’t usually what most of us think of in this situation, but there are some that can provide exactly what you need. In my opinion, a trip to Newcastle falls into this category.

Why Newcastle? Well, it’s got pretty much everything you could ask for – there are all the urban attractions you’d expect from a large, modern city, like swish restaurants and bars, amazing shops (sometimes we all benefit from a little retail therapy!) and cultural attractions aplenty. And for when you’re feeling like you need relaxation of a more traditional sort, there are gorgeous green spaces just steps away from the hustle and bustle (though they feel like they’re a world away), as well as indulgent spas and ultra-luxurious hotels.

With its green location and proximity to the city, Jesmond Dene House is the ultimate destination for a relaxing weekend break. Not only is it nestled in the beautiful Jesmond Dene – a charming natural oasis just moments outside the city centre – but it’s also close to several excellent spas and home to an amazing 3 AA Rosette restaurant.

What’s particularly handy about it is that you don’t need to be a guest to dine at the restaurant here, so you can either book a B&B in Newcastle in a different spot and visit when the mood takes you, or opt to stay in its luxurious rooms for the duration of your trip.

Local spas

Let’s take a quick look at the spas near Jesmond Dene House – because we all know that a little bit of pampering is just what most of us need to relax. One option is Serenity in the City, a stylish spa that offers everything from massages to manicures.

The nice thing about this place is that, while it’s a good idea to book, you can just pop in without an appointment (though obviously there’s no guarantee you’ll be able to get something done without a little bit of a wait).

Alternatively, you could head to Julie Carter Beauty – a luxurious salon that’ll make you feel refreshed and revitalised. A massive range of services are offered here; you can, for instance, treat yourself to a professional skin consultation, or you can enjoy something a little more directly relaxing, like a soothing massage.

Whichever salon you decide to visit, it’s well worth topping your trip off with a visit to Jesmond Dene House, where you can indulge in a decadent lunch or dinner that’s fit for royalty.

The Restaurant at Jesmond Dene House

With a reputation for excellent food, the Restaurant at Jesmond Dene House is the place to go for the perfect end to your weekend. What’s particularly appealing about it is that it believes in taste over style, which means you can look forward to trying some of Newcastle’s most flavoursome, mouthwatering meals. Plus, it uses locally sourced ingredients wherever possible, including some from its own kitchen garden – you can’t get much more local than that!

The menu varies depending on whether you’re coming for lunch or dinner, though if you’re keen to sample as many things as possible you can always try the tasting menu. Just to whet your appetite, the dinner menu includes things like ham hock terrine with pease pudding to start and lobster for main, followed by tempting treats such as a dark chocolate sphere, or cranberry and almond tart for dessert.
