In a back-and-forth match-up that saw its share of both mat mastery as well as good old fashioned fisticuffs, DiBiase scored several near falls on his former championship tag team partner, coming within a second of winning the historic title once held by the likes of Randy Savage, Shawn Michaels, Triple H, “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, The Rock and a litany of WWE Hall of Famers.
Rhodes used his WWE-approved protective mask as a weapon throughout the match. Eventually, DiBiase could stand no more of Rhodes’ tactics and tore the mask from the champion’s face. The challenger then could have used the evened playing field to take his time and win his first WWE singles title, but an incensed DiBiase instead immediately attempted to strike Rhodes with his own face guard, allowing the unmasked son of The American Dream to use a roll-up and score a quick win over the son of The Million Dollar Man.

But, what about DiBiase?
Perhaps his biggest accomplishment was holding the tag team championship alongside Rhodes for two reigns in 2008. Then after losing the tag titles, DiBiase went on to test Daniel Bryan in some competitive matches for the United States Championship – but he always fell short.
In 2011, Rhodes claimed to be the one who could help revitalize DiBiase’s career. But his intentions were highly suspect. For weeks, DiBiase endured humiliation, including being berated by Rhodes, having paper bags put over his head – and even taking the brunt of physical abuse from the likes of Orton and the massive Ezekiel Jackson.
Finally, on the Sept. 16 edition of SmackDown, DiBiase snapped. While disguised as a paper-bag-wearing member of the WWE Universe, DiBiase leaped from the crowd and assaulted his mentor.
Now that DiBiase has let his rage out of the bag so to speak, will Rhodes suffer the consequences?

We had thought this match was going to be on the main card, as it had been listed there by the WWE. Trying to convince everybody this is freeing up time for a match between The Rock and Stone Cold. Sheamus and Bryan scrapped in the ring for a while until both tumbled out of the ring and lumberjack ham broke loose. Teddy Long took the stage to declare INSTANT IMPROMPTU LUMBERJACK BATTLE ROYAL due to “outside interference.” I don’t know either.
Utter anarchy ensued. Everybody looked to be burning tons of calories and having a lot of fun. Mark Henry made the first move, throwing out all type of bammers akimbo. The match appeared to come down to the guys who started it all, with Sheamus saving himself on the ropes before kicking out Bryan.
But The Great Kali! The biggest man in the city was forgotten about! Kali clotheslined Sheamus out of the ring to take the win.

U.S. champion DANIEL BRYAN vs. TED DIBIASE (w/Maryse) — U.S. Title match
DiBiase and Bryan started trading holds, then the lights suddenly turned out. Bryan and DiBiase kept wrestling, then the lights came back on a few seconds later. Bryan landed a kick strike to the gut that cleared DiBiase to the apron, but DiBiase came back with a suplex clear over the top rope dropping Bryan to the floor. Back in the ring, DiBiase landed an elbow smash while Bryan was draped across the ring apron and the announcers noted DiBiase’s new aggression post-Goldust situation.
DiBiase settled into a side headlock as the crowd chanted for Bryan. Cole and Striker bickered some more regarding Bryan before Bryan landed a double foot kick to the chest that decked DiBiase. Bryan then landed trademark kick strikes and backflipped over DiBiase to land another blow. Bryan proceeded to smash DiBiase to the outside and immediately followed with a suicide dive onto DiBiase. Bryan immediately began selling a right shoulder injury before rolling DiBiase back in the ring. Bryan went up top and landed a signature double foot thrust kick to the chest that resulted in a two count. Bryan continued to sell the right shoulder before landing multiple kick strikes to the chest. And some more. DiBiase grabbed Bryan’s leg, but Bryan countered into a small package for a two count. Bryan teased the LeBell Lock, but DiBiase blocked and smashed Bryan with a clothesline for a two count. Pause for everyone to catch their breath.
